U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly (R-PA) commended the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Buffalo District and the Architectural Consulting Group for initiating construction on Erie Harbor’s north pier. The repair work, which involves approximately 1,800 feet of the damaged structure, is part of a broader effort totaling more than $7.5 million in projects in Erie for 2024.

In a statement, Rep. Mike Kelly highlighted the significance of the investment, stating, “This investment will benefit not only Erie, but the entire Great Lakes region." Lt. Col. Lyle Milliman, commander of the Buffalo District, emphasized the importance of Erie's piers, stating, “Erie’s piers are critical to the safety of the harbor, economic growth and recreational activities on the waterfront.”

Presque Isle State Park operations manager, Mathew Greene, noted the historical importance of the north pier, stating, “Historically, this landmark has been a staple for recreational users for decades." He also highlighted the various activities the pier facilitates, such as boating, fishing, surfing, and sightseeing.

The north pier, which has safeguarded the harbor since 1900, is undergoing repairs due to a collapsed timber crib structure and separated sheet pile. The $3.9 million federally funded project is set to be completed by October 2024.

Additionally, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is engaged in dredging the federal navigation channel in Erie Harbor and continuing the Presque Isle Beach Nourishment project. The dredging project, awarded in December 2023, aims to ensure accessible depths for large vessels and the flow of commodities. The beach nourishment project, ongoing since 1989, aims to prevent erosion of the Presque Isle Peninsula.

The construction at the North Pier may lead to periodic closures for public safety. Visitors to the area are advised to adhere to safety signage and avoid construction activities. The repairs are not expected to disrupt USCG activities, the operation of the Erie Western Pennsylvania Port, or waterfront businesses.

Erie Harbor, a vital deep draft commercial harbor, plays a crucial role in facilitating waterborne transportation and supporting local businesses. The harbor handled 787,000 tons of cargo in 2021, contributing significantly to the region's economy.
