Rep. Tim Bonner announced that grant funding has been awarded to 18 fire and emergency services departments within the 17th District, which includes parts of Mercer and Butler counties. These grants are managed by the Office of the State Fire Commissioner and the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency.

The funds can be used for a variety of purposes including construction, renovation, equipment purchases or repairs, and reducing existing debt. "Our first responders make daily sacrifices to protect and serve our communities," said Bonner. "With most of our companies being volunteer run, these essential grants are just one way our Commonwealth can support our first responders who keep our citizens safe."

In Mercer County, several organizations received grants: Fredonia Volunteer Fire Department ($13,094.35), Grove City Volunteer Fire Department ($16,322.02), Jackson Center Volunteer Fire Company ($14,815.77), Jefferson Township Volunteer Fire Department ($13,309.52), Pine Township Engine Company ($16,322.02), Sheakleyville Community Volunteer Fire Department ($12,448.81), Stoneboro Volunteer Fire Company ($13,094.35), Superior Ambulance Service Inc. ($15,000), and the Volunteer Fire Department of Springfield Township ($14,170.24).

Butler County recipients include Bruin Volunteer Fire Department with two allocations—one for $14,600.50 and another for EMS at $15,000—Eau Claire Volunteer Fire Department & Auxillary ($12,018.46), Karns City Regional Ambulance Service ($15,000), Harrisville Volunteer Fire Company ($13,094.35), Marion Township Volunteer Fire Company ($12,879.17), Petrolia Volunteer Fire Department ($13,094.35), Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Company and Rescue Team with two separate allocations for fire services at $12,879.17 and EMS at $10,051.

These grants are funded through a program established by the Legislature supported by proceeds from slot machine gaming rather than General Fund tax revenue.
