Position Title:  Environmental Education Coordinator

Pay Classification:  P&A 06 Hourly 35 (Entry $21.14/hr.)

Reports To:  Conservation District Director

Overview Description of the Position:

Serve as the Conservation District Department’s specialist regarding environmental education and science curriculum for Mercer County and Munnell Run Farm Education Center. To coordinate environmental education programs in the County and at Munnell Run Farm education facilities.  To develop and implement expanded programs for four season programs and curriculum for the students and community of Mercer County and other area regional environmental education efforts.   The Environmental Education Coordinator works under the supervision of the Conservation District Manager and is accountable to the Conservation District Department and Board of Directors.

Position Requirements:

A Bachelor Degree in Environmental Science, Biology, or related field and two years’ experience in related work.

Pennsylvania Teaching Certificate Preferred.

Maintain updated First Aid, CPR and AED certification.

Must possess all Pennsylvania Child Abuse Clearances as required by County policy.

Some evening and weekend work is required.

Communication with fellow staff, teachers, cooperating agencies and other organizations is key to the success of this position.  Must have good communication skills and be able to communicate effectively to others.

Ability to effectively respond to requests and questions from groups, teachers, school administrators, and the general public.

Ability to make oral presentations to groups of staff, students, parents and community members.

Ability to read charts, graphs and compute sums.

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.

Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality within and outside the education center and work collegially with all staff members.

Demonstrate the ability to use appropriate technology to process, store, and retrieve data required for the position.

Demonstrate appropriate software skill levels for word processing, spread sheets development, and construct and present visual presentations, and telecommunications skills.

Willingness to travel within Mercer County and elsewhere in the performance of EE duties

Possess a valid Pennsylvania driver's license.

Position Duties:

Lead the development and implementation of the K-12, College, Adult, and Family Environmental Education curriculum at local schools, community centers and Munnell Run Farm Education Center.

Supervision of education intern, part-time education staff and volunteers.

Conduct workshops for teachers and volunteers to enlarge and reinforce understanding and appreciation of conservation and environmental issues.

Coordinate non-classroom supplementary learning experiences for student groups, including field trips and outdoor education classes, in support of environmental education.

Develops and implements long and short term goals and objectives for the EE program. Prepares and monitors budgets for the program activities.

Interpret the environmental and conservation education program and curriculum to parents and the community.

Coordinate activities of the conservation district environmental education programs with professional agencies such as the US Fish and Wildlife, Department of Natural Resources, US Geological Survey and other local, regional and national agencies/organizations.

Compile and maintain a directory of community resources (people and places) available to add breadth, depth, reality, and pertinence to the environmental education curriculum.

Serve as faculty resource person to all teachers, students, student clubs and activity groups interested primarily in environmental and conservation issues.

Serves as a resource to County School Districts and educators for integration of environmental education into existing curricula.

Recruit and train volunteers to help with environmental and conservation programs.

Coordinate activities at the Munnell Run Farm Education Center.  Monitor and report maintenance issues pertaining to Munnell Run Farm Education Center buildings and grounds.

Develop and implement plans for use of the MRF Education Center by schools, community groups and businesses.  Oversee Environmental and Conservation Education development and implementation of summer programs.

Coordinate use of the Munnell Run Farm Education Center by all grade levels.

Act as science equipment manager for the hands-on science equipment rental program to schools and local groups.

Update permits and maintain scientific animal collection used in environmental education programs.

Write grants to secure funding for environmental education and outdoor education center programs.

Stay abreast of current environmental problems, issues, programs, and state and local citizen involvement activities.

As a representative of the Conservation District deal with the public in a courteous and professional manner.

Manage the Annual Tree Seedling Sale for the District.  Coordinate with Manager and Staff to coordinate sale activities.

Mercer County Envirothon Coordinator.

Perform all such other duties assigned.

Be knowledgeable and follow all conservation district policies.

Physical Requirement:

The employee is required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Ability to work outside during all times of the year.

Ability to traverse difficult terrain.

Must have the ability to engage in frequent computer use.

Must be able to lift up to 25lb on a regular basis and up to 50lb on an occasional basis.
