The Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority (PBDA) has granted funds to the New Castle Public Library, aiming to enhance digital connectivity in Lawrence County. This initiative will provide 200 laptops to local residents, as announced by Sen. Michele Brooks.
Brooks emphasized the importance of technology in modern life, stating, “Access to reliable internet and the necessary technology is no longer a luxury – it’s essential for education, job opportunities, healthcare accessibility and staying connected in today’s world.” She further added that these laptops are intended to help families and individuals overcome barriers and fully utilize digital resources.
The funding comes from the Federal American Rescue Plan Act Digital Connectivity Technology Program. This program allocated $20 million statewide to improve broadband access, with applicants demonstrating affordability as a significant barrier to adoption.
The PBDA functions as an independent agency within the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development. It was established with support from Senate Republicans and is tasked with developing a statewide broadband plan while distributing federal and state funds to expand broadband services in unserved and underserved regions across Pennsylvania.
