U.S. Reps. Mike Kelly, Ryan Zinke, Nick Langworthy, and Elise Stefanik, among other House Republicans, have raised concerns about the increasing number of apprehensions along the Northern border. In a letter to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, the lawmakers expressed their worries about the surge in illegal border crossings and drug smuggling.

The lawmakers highlighted the alarming statistics, stating, "In FY 2024 alone, Border Patrol agents are on track to apprehend a record number of illegal immigrants at the Northern border." They also pointed out the rise in drug smuggling, particularly of fentanyl and other synthetic opioids, which pose a serious threat to American communities.

The letter, signed by a total of 22 House Republicans, emphasized the need for action to address the situation at the Northern border. The lawmakers criticized the Biden administration for downplaying the severity of the border crisis and called for stronger measures to prevent the influx of illegal immigrants and drugs into the country.

Rep. Mike Kelly has been vocal about the vulnerabilities of the unsecured U.S. Northern border, testifying before the House Judiciary Committee and introducing a resolution to secure the Northern border. Reports from U.S. Customs & Border Protection have revealed a concerning number of suspects on the terror watchlist crossing into the United States along the Northern border, further underscoring the need for enhanced border security measures.

The Northern Border Security Caucus, co-founded by Reps. Kelly and Zinke, aims to address the unique challenges posed by illegal immigration and drug smuggling along the U.S.-Canadian border. With the Northern border spanning over 5,500 miles and facing increasing threats, the caucus advocates for a comprehensive approach to securing the border and protecting American communities.
