WASHINGTON, D.C. – On August 12, 2024, Task Force on the Attempted Assassination of Donald J. Trump Chairman Mike Kelly (R-PA) and Ranking Member Jason Crow (D-CO) sent two investigation letters requesting documents and information related to the assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13, 2024. The Task Force is a bipartisan House entity consisting of 13 members charged with investigating the shooting by a resolution unanimously agreed to by the House of Representatives.

The first letter is addressed to U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and U.S. Secret Service Acting Director Ronald Rowe. The second is addressed to Attorney General Merrick Garland and FBI Director Christopher Wray.

Both letters request “all documents and information that have been produced to date, to any committee of the House or Senate related to the attempted assassination of former President Donald J. Trump” as well as a briefing no later than August 16, 2024.

For further details on these requests, read the letter to the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Secret Service here and the letter to the Department of Justice and FBI here.

More information about the task force, including a full list of members, can be found at: July13TaskForce.House.Gov.

Background on the Task Force:

The Task Force holds all investigative authority granted by the House of Representatives, including subpoena power, and oversees all pending House committee investigations regarding the Trump assassination attempt.

The goals of the Task Force are threefold:

1. To understand what went wrong on the day of the attempted assassination.

2. To ensure accountability.

3. To prevent such an agency failure from occurring again.

The Task Force will make recommendations for reform to relevant government agencies and propose any necessary legislation to implement these reforms.
