State Representative Parke Wentling | Pennsylvania 7th Legislative District
On January 19, 2024, Rep. Parke Wentling and the House Republican Policy Committee convened a hearing in the Shenango Valley to discuss ways to strengthen rural communities in Pennsylvania. The hearing, titled "Strengthening Our Rural Communities," aimed to address the challenges faced by these communities, including burdensome government regulations and a diminishing workforce.
During the hearing, Honorable Rod E. Wilt, executive director of Penn-Northwest Development Corporation, highlighted the struggle of retaining young people in rural communities and attracting others to settle there. He emphasized the importance of workforce development initiatives and the need to capitalize on the opportunities that Mercer County presents.
Jake Rickert, director of workforce development at Penn-Northwest Development Corporation, mentioned the Homegrown Initiative as a successful program that provides resources and opportunities for young adults looking to settle in Mercer County.
Tracy Mantzell, a Realtor from RE/MAX, identified key real estate challenges in rural communities, including the lack of new construction and move-in ready homes, difficulty in financing homes, and a limited supply of amenities. She stressed the importance of addressing these issues to attract people to rural areas.
The hearing also featured testimonies from Pennsylvania employers Brent Fisher, director of operations at Joy Baking Group, and Michael Walton, CEO of Jamestown Coating Technologies. They highlighted the challenges in recruitment and retention of skilled workers in manufacturing. Despite offering competitive wages, excellent benefits, and a safe work environment, they faced difficulties in retaining employees. Fisher emphasized the quality of the Mercer community but expressed frustration that his employees do not stay long enough to recognize it.
Rep. Parke Wentling, a longstanding advocate for Pennsylvania employers, expressed his commitment to helping businesses thrive and supporting rural communities. He emphasized the need for government support in creating a favorable environment for workforce entry and retention.
The hearing shed light on the urgent need to address the challenges faced by rural communities in Pennsylvania. By focusing on workforce development initiatives, improving housing opportunities, and supporting businesses, these communities can be revitalized and thrive once again.
