Senator Michele Brooks and Representative Parke Wentling have announced the approval of two state grants valued at more than $260,000 for projects in Mercer County. These grants, provided by the Commonwealth Financing Authority's Greenways, Trails, and Recreation Program, are intended to enhance local parks and recreational facilities.
Senator Brooks expressed her enthusiasm for collaborating with local municipalities to secure funding that enhances recreational options for families and visitors. She stated, "This project continues to build on the growth of downtown Sharon and capitalizes on its waterfront appeal."
A grant of $166,970 will be directed to Sharon City's Riverfront Park Walkway Project. This initiative will convert the former Huntington Bank Building location into a park featuring trails, walkways, and seating along the Shenango River. The area will also benefit from new energy-efficient lighting, designed to improve safety and accessibility. The project is expected to start soon and be completed within the year.
Additionally, the City of Hermitage will receive $95,000 to enhance its Athletic Complex with lighting for one of its fields. The facility, which currently consists of two softball fields, will now be able to host events during evening hours, increasing its utility.
Representative Wentling remarked, "This is fantastic news for the Shenango Valley. Both projects will be beneficial for everyone and help continue to make the district one of the best places to live, work and raise a family."
The Commonwealth Financing Authority was formed in 2004 as part of the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development.
