U.S. Representative Mike Kelly has co-sponsored the Benjamin Franklin Statue Placement Act, a bill designed to honor Benjamin Franklin by placing a statue of him along the U.S. Capitol Tour route. The initiative aims to have the statue installed before 2026, aligning with America's 250th anniversary.
The legislation is spearheaded by Representatives Chrissy Houlahan and Brian Fitzpatrick, alongside Senators Chris Coons and John Boozman. "Whether it was his role as Founding Father, a diplomat, postmaster general, newspaper editor and printer, or inventor, Benjamin Franklin helped to shape the United States from its earliest days," said Kelly. He expressed enthusiasm for honoring Franklin's legacy in time for the nation's milestone birthday.
Houlahan emphasized Franklin's pivotal role in American history: “Benjamin Franklin is an integral part of the American story.” She noted his unique status as the only signer of all three key documents that established American independence from Britain. Houlahan expressed gratitude for bipartisan support in this effort.
Fitzpatrick highlighted Franklin's significance to Philadelphia and America: “I am proud to join my fellow Pennsylvanian, Rep. Houlahan, on this bipartisan effort.” Coons remarked on Franklin’s contributions to democracy and unity among colonies: “His work to unify the colonies and his contributions to our Constitution played a major role.”
Boozman pointed out Franklin’s diplomatic achievements: “Benjamin Franklin’s unique role in our nation’s founding...deserves special acknowledgment.” As Co-Chair of the Senate French Caucus, Boozman supports ensuring visitors can appreciate this historical connection.
Franklin's legacy includes significant scientific discoveries such as identifying lightning as electricity. His political roles included negotiating the Treaty of Paris and helping draft foundational U.S. documents like the Declaration of Independence and Constitution. Despite being born in Massachusetts, he had substantial ties to Pennsylvania where he contributed significantly to its development.
