U.S. Representative Mike Kelly of Pennsylvania has voiced his support for the natural gas industry in the state and criticized the Biden administration's decision to pause new liquified natural gas (LNG) export projects. Pennsylvania is the second-largest natural gas producing state in the United States, accounting for 20.4% of the country's annual natural gas extraction, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
Rep. Kelly expressed his concerns on the House floor, highlighting the impact of the administration's decision on American energy, jobs, and national security. He called on the Biden administration to reverse the pause, stating that it would harm the reliability of energy supply for both the United States and its European allies.
"When President Biden was campaigning, he couldn't stop telling the American people how he would end fossil fuels. This is yet another example of promises made, promises kept from this President," Rep. Kelly said. "We're talking about jobs. We're talking about the cost of energy. We're talking about a reliability not on a foreign supplier, but on our own domestic energy. The President's decision is pushing our European allies, who rely on American LNG for their energy supply, right back into the hands of Vladimir Putin and the Russians to supply energy for them instead. I call on the Biden administration to reverse this dangerous decision."
The Biden administration's pause on new LNG export projects was announced on January 26. The Department of Energy (DOE) will conduct a review during this period to assess the economic and environmental impacts of projects seeking approval to export LNG to Europe and Asia, where there is high demand for the fuel.
This decision is seen as a setback for the United States, which became the world's largest LNG supplier in 2023. European nations had reduced their purchases of LNG and natural gas products from Russia following its war with Ukraine. The pause on new LNG export projects could potentially hinder the growth of the industry in the United States.
Pennsylvania, with its significant natural gas production, plays a crucial role in the country's energy sector. The state's abundant natural gas resources have contributed to its economic growth and job creation. The pause on new LNG export projects could have a negative impact on Pennsylvania's economy and the livelihoods of its residents.
It is important to note that the United States has been striving for energy independence and reducing reliance on foreign suppliers. The pause on LNG exports raises concerns about the country's ability to meet its own energy needs and maintain a stable energy supply for its allies.
The Biden administration's decision has sparked a debate about the future of the natural gas industry and its role in the country's energy transition. Supporters of the industry argue that natural gas can serve as a bridge fuel towards a cleaner energy future, while critics emphasize the importance of transitioning to renewable energy sources to combat climate change.
As the discussion continues, stakeholders in the natural gas industry, including Rep. Kelly, will advocate for policies that support the growth and sustainability of the industry. The outcome of this debate will have significant implications for the energy landscape in the United States and its position as a global energy leader.
