Senator Michele Brooks announced that the City of Sharon will receive a state grant of $762,534 to upgrade traffic signals at several intersections. The funding aims to improve safety for both pedestrians and motorists in the city.
The project is part of the ongoing Sharon Streetscape Project. It will involve installing LED traffic signals at the intersections of Euclid Avenue and State Street, Stambaugh Avenue, and North Oakland Avenue and State Street. In addition, emergency vehicle preemption technology will be added to these intersections to help emergency vehicles move more efficiently.
Brooks stated, “Understanding the importance of safe and efficient traffic flow for our communities, I was pleased to advocate for this funding for the City of Sharon. It is also my hope that with these upgrades it will help our emergency response vehicles. The installation of these two new traffic signals will allow the funds typically used to maintain the lights at these intersections to be used at other locations throughout the city to continue traffic flow and safety improvements.”
Other planned improvements include new mast arms, updated signal controllers with battery backup, detection systems for vehicles and pedestrians, new pedestrian signals, and replacement wiring. The city will contribute a local match of $190,633 toward the total project cost of $953,167.
Funding comes from Pennsylvania’s Green Light-Go program. This program was established by the General Assembly in 2013 as a competitive grant initiative focused on improving traffic signal efficiency across communities in Pennsylvania.
