Senator Michele Brooks has expressed her approval following the final passage of the Save Women’s Sports Act. This legislation, aimed at maintaining fairness in girls’ and women’s sports across Pennsylvania’s K-12 schools and colleges, has now been passed by the Senate.
The bill, known as Senate Bill 9, was sponsored by Senator Judy Ward along with a coalition of senators including Brooks. It stipulates that athletic teams designated for females should not be open to biological males. The purpose of this bill is to protect the integrity of women’s sports and preserve opportunities for female athletes.
Brooks commented on the significance of this development: “Today is a victory for fairness and common sense,” she stated. She reflected on young female athletes in Pennsylvania who dedicate time and effort to their sports but face challenges when competing against individuals born male with genetic advantages.
The legislation targets public schools, colleges, and universities associated with the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) and the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE), among others. Brooks highlighted that while the bill does not exclude anyone from participating in sports, it ensures that teams remain consistent with their intended designation, thereby securing equal opportunities for female athletes.
The next step for the bill is consideration by the House of Representatives.
