U.S. Representative Mike Kelly, Chairman of the Ways & Means Subcommittee on Tax, was present today at the White House alongside President Donald J. Trump, where the President introduced a series of tariffs and economic policies aimed at enhancing the competitiveness of U.S. businesses internationally.
This occasion, termed “Make America Wealthy Again,” took place in the Rose Garden in honor of what President Trump has termed “Liberation Day.”
Congressman Kelly emphasized the significance of the President’s agenda, stating, “President Trump has made it clear: the America First agenda is focused on creating American jobs and strengthening national security. This is critically important to ensure not only free trade with other nations, but fair trade in this global economy.”
Earlier this week, Congressman Kelly, who is also the co-chair of the House Automotive Caucus, appeared on NewsNation. He discussed the essential nature of automotive tariffs, President Trump’s goal of increasing domestic automobile production, and revitalizing the U.S. automotive industry.
Recent studies and reports provide insights into the impact of tariffs implemented during President Trump’s first term. In 2024, an analysis indicated that these tariffs “strengthened the U.S. economy” and resulted in considerable reshoring within manufacturing and steel industries. Additionally, a 2023 analysis by the U.S. International Trade Commission highlighted that Section 232 and 301 tariffs led to reduced imports from China, stimulated U.S. production of affected goods, and had negligible effects on downstream prices.
The Economic Policy Institute also reported that tariffs implemented in the first term were not linked to inflation and momentarily affected overall prices. Their review noted improvements in U.S. steel output, employment, investment, and financial performance following the enactment of Section 232 measures in 2018, with plans for substantial investments and job creation in new and updated steel facilities.
Prior to this week’s announcement from President Trump, countries such as Israel and Vietnam have dropped their tariffs on U.S. imports.
