The Mercer County Historical Society (MCHS) has received a $9,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) Cultural and Historical Support Grant Program. The announcement was made by State Representatives Tim Bonner and Parke Wentling, both representing Mercer County.
According to the representatives, the funding will help cover administrative support salaries, insurance for five historical sites managed by MCHS, and technology upgrades. The grant may also be used for daily operational expenses such as newsletter printing, utility bills, and new equipment purchases.
“I am pleased the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission has awarded the Mercer County Historical Society the grant money to further the preservation of the history of Mercer County,” said Bonner.
Wentling added, “As a Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission commissioner, I was proud to support this grant for the Mercer County Historical Society. I know it will go toward their goal of showcasing the incredible history we have here.”
The PHMC Cultural and Historical Support Grant Program aims to provide general operating support to museums and official county historical societies in Pennsylvania that do not receive direct operating funds from other state agencies.
Founded in 1947 as a non-profit organization, MCHS began with a donated house in Mercer borough in 1951. In 1984, an addition known as the Anderson Building expanded museum space with displays, a research library, offices, and public areas. Currently, MCHS owns five historic sites across Mercer County that are open to visitors on Sundays from May through August.
