The Mercer County Historical Society (MCHS) has received a $9,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) through its Cultural and Historical Support Grant Program. The announcement was made by State Representatives Tim Bonner and Parke Wentling, both Republicans representing Mercer County.
According to the representatives, the funds will be used for administrative support salaries, insurance costs for five historical sites managed by MCHS, technology upgrades, and daily operational expenses such as printing newsletters, paying utility bills, and purchasing equipment.
“I am pleased the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission has awarded the Mercer County Historical Society the grant money to further the preservation of the history of Mercer County,” Bonner said.
Wentling added, “As a Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission commissioner, I was proud to support this grant for the Mercer County Historical Society. I know it will go toward their goal of showcasing the incredible history we have here.”
The PHMC’s Cultural and Historical Support Grant Program aims to provide operating support to museums and county historical societies in Pennsylvania that do not receive direct state agency funding.
The MCHS was established as a non-profit organization in 1947. In 1951, it received a house known as Magoffin within Mercer borough. An addition called the Anderson Building was constructed in 1984, expanding space for museum displays, a research library, offices, and other facilities. Currently, MCHS owns five historic sites across Mercer County that are open to visitors on Sundays from May through August.
