According to U.S. Census Bureau estimates, the older adult population in the United States is rising as the number of younger residents declines. Between 2020 and 2024, Americans age 65 and over increased by 13%, while those under 18 decreased by 1.7%. The nation’s older population has grown sharply since 1920, expanding from 4.9 million to over 61 million by 2024.

A study from 2021 estimates that about half of Americans in this group—nearly 28 million—are likely to need long-term services and support, with more than one third predicted to require care in a nursing home.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an industry education group. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
