House Republican policymakers in Pennsylvania announced on Mar. 25 a new initiative called “Freedom Through Affordability,” which aims to provide tax relief and lower costs for families across the state. The plan, introduced at a Capitol press conference, includes six-month tax cuts and sales tax holidays as part of a multi-billion-dollar effort to address rising prices affecting households.
The initiative is intended to help residents manage increasing expenses on essentials such as energy, transportation, and child care. Supporters say these measures will allow Pennsylvanians to keep more of their earnings while making daily life more affordable.
Rep. David Rowe, chairman of the House Republican Policy Committee, said, “Our goal is simple: Make Pennsylvania a place where families can afford to live, work and build their future. When people can keep more of what they earn and the cost of everyday life is within reach, they have the freedom to make their own choices about their future. That’s what this effort is about – achieving freedom through affordability for people across the Commonwealth.”
Key proposals include reducing the state Personal Income Tax rate from 3.07% to 2.99% for six months and suspending the Gross Receipts Tax on electricity and telecommunications during that period. Rep. Kristin Marcell said, “Everywhere I go in my community, people are looking for a break from rising costs, especially on the basics of life… This temporary tax holiday is a commonsense way to give them that break.” Rep. Eric Davanzo added that high energy costs affect all sectors: “Because energy costs factor into production, wholesale and retail costs on everyday products, this relief will be felt across the Commonwealth’s entire economy.”
Rep. Abby Major introduced legislation targeting fuel prices by proposing a suspension of Pennsylvania’s gas tax for six months: “High fuel costs compound the financial strain Pennsylvanians already face due to inflation… My legislation will provide temporary relief.” Lawmakers also launched an “Affordability Starts Here” tour led by Rep. Joe Hogan to gather input from residents statewide about ways to reduce living expenses.
