Rep. Tim Bonner announced on Feb. 25 that the Fredonia Volunteer Fire Department in Mercer County has received $13,775 in funding from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, with support from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service.

The funding will be used to purchase wildfire suppression equipment, protective gear, communications tools, and training for the department. This grant aims to help rural fire companies better respond to emergencies in their communities.

“I am grateful for this investment in the Fredonia Volunteer Fire Department,” Bonner said. “It will undoubtedly keep residents of Mercer County safer and better protected by strengthening the department’s ability to respond to emergencies.”

The grant was awarded through a cost-share program that provides up to $15,000 to rural fire companies serving municipalities with fewer than 10,000 residents. Bonner said such support is vital for small boroughs like Fredonia that rely on volunteer fire departments during emergencies.

“Small boroughs like Fredonia depend on their volunteer fire departments in times of emergency,” Bonner said. “This support will continue to ensure they have the tools needed to respond.”

The funding is expected to enhance emergency response capabilities and improve safety for both firefighters and local residents.
